Govt Orders Suspension Of Body Spray Layer’r Shot’s Ads Having Gang Rape Jokes

Mumbai: The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has ordered the suspension of controversial deodorant advertisements by Layer’s Shot. An inquiry is being held as per the advertising code.

It asked Twitter and YouTube to take necessary actions the removal the advertisements.

According to people familiar with the matter, letters have been sent to both the platforms by the government, stating that the “video is harmful to the depiction of women in the interest of decency or morality” and is in violation of Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules of 2021.

Meanwhile, Swati Malilwal, the chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, has said: “(Layer’r Shot) Deodorant advertisement blatantly promotes the rape mentality in the country. We’ve issued notice to Delhi Police that FIR must be registered & ad must be immediately taken down from all platforms.”

According to Twitter users, these ads were aired during the England vs New Zealand cricket match. Both ads show women in a ‘tough place’ for fear that they will be sexually harassed or made obscene remarks by a group of men.

The first ad begins with a couple in the bedroom. Shortly after, four of the boy’s friends enter the room and ask the ‘boyfriend’, “Shot mara lagta hai (looks like you took the shot)?” He replies that he did, leaving the woman in shock. One of them then rolls up his sleeve and starts going to bed saying, “Ab our turn (now it’s our turn).”

The woman backs away in fear, perhaps because of an attack, but the ad shows the man picking up a bottle of perfume from a dresser.

The second ad is shot in a grocery store where a group of men are seen talking standing behind a woman.

One of them says, “Hum char aur ye sirf ek (We’re four and this is just one)”, while another man asks, “To shot kaun lega (Who will take the shot)?”.

The girl, overhearing the conversation, turns around in anger and fear when the ad reveals they were discussing the last remaining bottle of the body spray.
