How Many MPs Of Opposition Parties Are Left In Parliament After Record 141 Suspensions?

Mumbai: On Tuesday, approximately 49 more Opposition MPs were suspended from Lok Sabha for the balance of this winter session, in addition to the 78 MPs – 33 from Lok Sabha and 45 from Rajya Sabha – who were suspended on Monday for disorderly behavior and disobedience for the Chair’s directives.

With the suspension of 14 opposition MPs (13 from Lok Sabha and one from Rajya Sabha) on Thursday, a total of 141 opposition MPs have been suspended from both chambers this session.

The suspension came as the opposition continued to prod Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for statements on last week’s Parliament security incident.

Among those expelled from Parliament this session are Shashi Tharoor of the Congress, Karti Chidambaram, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Gaurav Gogoi of the NCP, Dimple Yadav of the Samajwadi Party, and Farooq Abdullah of the National Conference.

How Many Opposition MPs Are Left?

323 of the 522 Lok Sabha MPs are either from the BJP or an associated party. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alone has 290 legislators.

95 of the remaining 199 opposition MPs in the Lok Sabha have been suspended, leaving only 104 opposition lawmakers in the Lower House. Notably, the majority of the remaining MPs are from parties such as Andhra Pradesh’s ruling YSR Congress Party and Odisha’s Biju Janata Dal, both of which had previously backed the BJP.

The BJP and the NDA have 109 of the 245 seats in the Rajya Sabha. 46 of the remaining 136 MPs have been suspended from the House for the remainder of the winter session.

As a result, only 90 opposition MPs remain in the Upper House to confront the ruling party.
