I’m In My 30s And Still Here: Sania On Competing In Her 4th Olympics

Sania will play alongside Ankita Raina and is hoping to play in the Olympics with a fellow Indian woman

Mumbai: Ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, six-time Grand Slam doubles champion Sania Mirza said that she has had an amazing career so far. Sania will become the first female athlete to represent India at four Olympics when she features at the Tokyo Games, slated to get underway from July 23.

The tennis legend does not think about how long she will play the game and only focuses on living in the present moment. “I’ve had a wonderful career. It’s just about believing in myself and believing in my abilities,” Sania was quoted as saying by olympic.com.

“I’m in my 30s and I’m still here! I don’t really think about it too much (how long will I play). I take it day in and day out, I’m really not too far into the future.” Think,” he said. Sania said that she is also training off-court to be in better form and more agile.

Sania said, “I am doing a lot of work on the court. But I am training outside the court as well. I am doing a lot of explosive moves to stay sharp and strong.”

Sania, who teamed up with Rohan Bopanna, failed to win a medal after finishing fourth at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

“It was one of the most devastating moments of my life that I came so close to winning a medal and didn’t win it,” she said.

“Having said that, I am really looking forward to it. I love to represent India wherever I play but it is an honor and pride for all the athletes to play for the country especially in the Olympics. Told me Gaya whether I play in Tokyo Sania said, “I would have participated in the most Olympics with any woman, along with anyone else. I am forever grateful to be here and look forward to my next Olympics.”

Sania will play alongside Ankita Raina and is hoping to play in the Olympics with a fellow Indian woman.

Sania said, “The first time I met her, she was probably 14 or 15. And she is very disciplined, which is her biggest strength. I have never gone into the Olympics with a fellow female Indian player who is top-100 in the world,” said Sania.

“It’s really good to play with someone who is on the tour on a regular basis. She has a long way to go. But at least she’s there, playing every week and kind of understands the level,” she added.
