IMD Issues Red Alert For 10 Districts In Kerala For Today Amid Heavy Rains

Mumbai: India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘red’ alert for 10 districts in Kerala for today amid heavy rains in the state.

The ‘red’ alert has been issued in all districts except Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Kasargod, where an ‘orange’ alert has been sounded for Tuesday and Wednesday.

According to the IMD rain forecast for Kerala issued at 10 am on Tuesday, a red alert has been issued in all districts of Kerala except Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Kasaragod, where an orange alert has been issued on August 2 and 3.

The department has also warned of heavy and very heavy rain at various places in the state till August 5.

As the heavy rains continued, authorities set up relief camps in various districts and closed tourist places in the high hills of Idukki.

In Kottayam, the body of a man who went missing a day earlier was recovered from the Kuttikkal Chhappath area of ​​the district on Tuesday morning, the emergency operations centre there said.

In Thrissur, the Chalakudy river water levels rose by nearly 5 metres around 2 AM on Tuesday due to the heavy rains leading to the district administration advising those living on the low-lying areas of the river’s banks to move to safer places.

A red alert indicates heavy to extremely heavy rains of over 20 cm in 24 hours, while an orange alert means very heavy rains from 6 cm to 20 cm of rain. A yellow alert means heavy rainfall between 6 and 11 cm.
