India Is Your Home, PM Modi Tells Afghan Sikh-Hindu Delegation

Mumbai: An Afghan Sikh-Hindu delegation on Saturday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

In a meeting with PM Modi at his residence, the delegation praised the central government for the CAA, saying it provided shelter to Afghan refugees. PM Modi told the delegation that India is his home.

“This (India) is your home. You are not a guest for us and every Indian has equal love and respect towards you,” PM Modi said during the meeting today.

Praising the Prime Minister, a member said, “Only you (PM Modi) can understand the pain of Indians and Sikhs living across the country. Wherever there is a problem I see you came forward.”

Members of the delegation praised the Prime Minister for taking various steps to allow minorities in neighbouring South Asian countries to take up Indian citizenship.

“When no one was listening, you were the only one who listened to us. They (Afghan people) have gathered here to thank you for the fight you fought during CAA. After this, they get the opportunity. to live in India,” he said.

The delegation presented an Afghan turban to PM Modi. Appreciating the gesture, the Prime Minister said: “This (Afghan turban) is a symbol of Afghanistan. With me, it would have been a great pleasure to wear the turban gifted by all of you.”

Recalling an incident during his visit to Kabul, he said that personally, I have received a lot of love and care from Afghans.

The delegation included leaders of the Indian national community of Afghan origin including Guljit Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Dr. Raghunath Kochhar Afghan. The visit comes as PM Modi hosted a delegation of eminent personalities and spiritual leaders of the Sikh community at his official residence on Friday.
