India Win Historic Gold Medal In Women’s Cricket at Asian Games

Mumbai: The Indian women’s cricket team defeated Sri Lanka by 19 runs in the final to win gold medal in their first appearance at the Asian Games. India put up a total of 116/7 in their 20 overs and restricted Sri Lanka to 97/8 in 20 overs.

After winning the toss, India posted a total of 116 runs, while vice-captain Smriti Mandhana scored 46 runs and Jemimah Rodrigues played second fiddle with 42 runs. Sri Lankan batsmen Hasini Perera (25 runs) and Nilakshi De Silva (23 runs) tried to give a good reply to the batting but the Indian spinners came in the middle and dashed SL’s hopes.

The women’s cricket team won a historic gold medal in India’s first appearance at the 19th Asian Games. 18-year-old Titas Sadhu who played her second T20I led India’s bowling with a magical spell of 3/2 with captain Chamari Athapathu.

After defeats in last year’s Commonwealth Games and in the T20 World Cup semi-finals earlier this year, the Indian women’s cricket team has finally got their hands on the big prize. Although the batting couldn’t blow Sri Lanka out of the water, rookie fast bowler Titas Sadhu single-handedly bagged the gold medal for the Indian women’s cricket team.
