India Wins Gold Medal In Badminton For The First Time In Asian Games History

Mumbai: India on Saturday created history by winning their first-ever gold medal in badminton at the Asian Games. The Indian pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won the gold medal in the men’s doubles event after defeating South Korea’s Choi Sol-gyu and Kim Won-ho 21-18, 21-16 in the final. It is India’s third medal in badminton in the 19th Asian Games.

The South Korean team was up 18-15 in the opening set. The top Indian pair roared back into the match, winning six straight games and ultimately winning the first set 21-18 with some electrifying badminton.

Satwiksairaj-Chirag did not look back after winning the opening game, as the pair advanced through the gears in the second game to win the gold medal match in straight sets.

On Friday, Satwik and Chirag became the first Indian team to get to the Asian Games men’s doubles final. In the semifinal, they upset Malaysian Olympic champions Soh Wooi Yik and Aaron Chia.

21-17, 21-12 was the final score, favoring the Indian duo. The 24-minute first set featured a challenge from the Malaysian team. They struggled to match the Indian duo’s ferocity in the second set, which they won 21-12 in 23 minutes.
