Mumbai: After accepting Pakistan’s proposal for consular access to Kulbhushan Jadhav. India’s in-charge Diafair Gaurav Ahluwalia arrived in Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry (MOFA) and met Kulbhushan Jadhav, the agencies reported.

“We hope that Pakistan will ensure the right atmosphere so that the meeting is free, fair, meaningful and effective in keeping with the letter and spirit of the ICJ’s orders,” ANI reported citing government sources.

India has admitted that Jadhav, a former Indian Navy officer, was illegally abducted by Pakistan from Iran. He was sentenced to death by a military court in April 2017 on charges of espionage and terrorism. India challenged the decision in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. The ICJ stayed Jadhav’s death sentence and asked Pakistan to review the death penalty awarded to him.

The court also accepted India’s argument and asked Pakistan to comply with the Vienna Convention and to give Pakistan consular access to Jadhav.

While Pakistan responded that it was willing to offer consular access to Jadhav, India was unhappy with the conditions in Islamabad which New Delhi felt violated the Vienna Convention. According to the Vienna conference, India agreed to meet Jadhav after Pakistan changed the terms.

Despite ruling in favour of India, Pakistan interpreted the ICJ order as a victory and claimed that it did not order the release of Jadhav.
