IPL 13: Dinesh Karthik Steps Down As KKR Captain Mid-Season, Eoin Morgan To Lead

Mumbai: Dinesh Karthik has stepped down as KKR captain in mid-season to focus on his batting and contributing more to the team cause and handed over the captaincy to Eoin Morgan.

KKR management thanked Karthik for contributing “over the last two and a half years” as captain and wished Eoin Morgan the best. Kolkata Knight Riders will be seen in action on Friday when they take on the defending champions Mumbai Indians at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

“We are fortunate to have leaders like DK who have always put the team first. It requires a lot of courage for someone to make that kind of decision. While we were surprised by his decision, we honored him. We are fortunate that 2019 World Cup-winning captain, who has been the vice-captain, Eoin Morgan is ready to lead the side going forward,” KKR CEO Venky Mysore said on the official website.

He added, “DK and Eoin have performed brilliantly during this tournament and although Eoin has served as captain, it is effectively a role and we expect this change to work seamlessly.”

Eoin Morgan’s first job as captain is no more difficult than facing KKR as today’s Mumbai Indians team.

KKR currently sits fourth in the IPL 2020 points table with four wins and three defeats to their name.

Morgan has played all seven matches for KKR so far this season, scoring 175 runs at an average of 35 and a strike-rate of 129.62. He is the second-highest run-scorer for KKR in IPL 2020 after Shubman Gill.
