Is Centre Trying To Turn Manipur Into Kashmir: TMC

Mumbai: On the day Union Home Minister Amit Shah held an all-party meeting on the Manipur crisis, TMC demanded an all-party delegation to be sent to the violence-hit state within a week.

TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien accused the Centre of “ignoring” the demands of the people of Manipur during an all-party meeting on the situation in the northeastern state led by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the party said in a statement.

The meeting is being attended by leaders from several political groups, including the BJP, Congress, TMC, Left parties, and others.

According to the BJP’s Manipur in-charge Sambit Patra, Home Minister Amit Shah stated that all attempts are being made to restore calm in Manipur on the directives of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Patra further informed that since the state’s violence began, there has “not been a single day” when he has not spoken to PM Modi about the issue or the prime minister has not given directives.

The TMC issued a statement outlining a timeline of the state’s violence, highlighting the case of a seven-year-old kid who was allegedly burned to death with his mother and aunt while on his way to a hospital with a bullet wound.

“This is one story,” the TMC said. “There are thousands of other such heart-wrenching stories. Manipur is in a treacherous situation, and the Union Government has failed miserably.

“When Manipur burns, Assam is affected, Meghalaya is affected, the entire North-East is affected. The whole nation is affected. Is the Union Government trying to turn Manipur into Kashmir?,” the party said in the statement which included remarks of Derek O’Brien.

According to the party, the state has a pervasive sense of pessimism, terror, and desperation, with lives lost, students unable to take examinations, patients impacted, and people living in fear.

Over 4,000 residences have been attacked and demolished, 60,000 people have been relocated, and internet services have been suspended across the state for more than 50 days, according to the report.

“There is a complete collapse of the constitutional machinery in the State,” the party claimed.

The party further claimed that Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to the state was extremely delayed, arriving nearly four weeks after the violence began and that he “only visited camps and met with selected people.”

“He did not meet the people on the streets who have been affected by the trauma. The three-day visit by the Home Minister did not improve the situation at all. In fact, it deteriorated after that,” it said.

The TMC said its leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had sought permission to visit Manipur, but she received no response from the home minister.
