Israel Allows Humanitarian Aid To Gaza Via Egypt After Joe Biden’s Request

Mumbai: Israel would let aid enter Gaza via Egypt, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced on Wednesday.

“In light of (US) President (Joe) Biden’s demand, Israel would not foil the supply of humanitarian aid via Egypt,” the PM’s office said.

It said Israel “will not thwart” deliveries of food, water or medicine, as long as they don’t go to Hamas militants.

As long as supplies “do not reach Hamas,” the group in control of Gaza, relief to people in the southern Gaza Strip would be permitted, according to the statement.

Israel insisted that supplies would not arrive from its own land until Hamas freed the scores of hostages it had taken in a huge onslaught on October 7, which turned into an all-out war, even though it had stated it would allow help to flow through Egypt.

“Israel demands Red Cross visits with our captives and is working to mobilize broad international support for this demand,” said the statement.

Gaza is suffering from a crushing embargo imposed by Israel since the Islamist Hamas militants took over in 2007. Supplies of food, gasoline, and water are running short.

After October 7, Israel essentially closed off the coastal enclave.

As Biden concluded a critical visit, he gave Israeli officials assurances about US assistance going forward and supported his ally’s claim that Palestinian terrorists were responsible for a fatal missile attack on a Gaza hospital.
