Mumbai: Local BJP leader Sheetal Munda and his wife Maade Hassa were shot dead by unknown assailants in front of their children in Jharkhand’s Khunti district, police said.
“So far, we didn’t find any Maoist link in the case,” police added. Munda’s children told police that the assailants told him that he constructed ponds but did not give money to them.
The incident occurred late Friday. However, the villagers reported it to the police on Saturday morning. The couple had two minor children at home when they were shot.
Munda is survived by two daughters and a son. Her elder daughter is an 11th-grade student at Kasturba Gandhi Residential School, Murhu.
Villagers said that Munda had dug two pounds during his tenure. The miscreants were allegedly demanding payment for the construction of the pond. Police are also investigating whether they were demanding commission or levy. Only then, will it become clear whether Munda was killed by miscreants or by Maoists, police said.
The children told the police that three miscreants, who were wearing jeans and T-shirts, barged into the house.
The miscreants told Munda that he built the ponds but did not give them the money. “After this, they killed our father,” the police quoted the children as saying.
Police said that when Munda’s wife screamed, the miscreants also shot her.
