Kane Williamson Ruled Out Of Second Test Due To Injury, Tom Latham To Lead Kiwis

Virat Kohli will be coming back to the playing XI, as Ajinkya Rahane sustained an injury during a first test match

Mumbai: Following a left elbow injury, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson has been ruled out of the second Test match against India in Mumbai.

Tom Latham will be stepping in as a stand-in skipper to lead the Kiwis in the second Test against India, here at the Wankhede Stadium.

In an official release, New Zealand Head Coach Gary Stead said that due to the tight schedule of the player throughout the year, it has been hard for Williamsson to recover fully.

“It’s been a really tough time for Kane having to deal with such a persistent injury. While I we’ve been able to manage the injury through the year and the T20 World Cup, the shift to Test cricket and the increased batting loading has re-aggravated his elbow. Ultimately the injury is still not right and while he got through the Kanpur Test, it was clear playing in the second Test wasn’t an option,” said New Zealand Coach Gary Stead.

“It’s been a challenging year for Kane trying to manage his elbow and it’s important we now formulate a good plan with him to ensure the injury does not continue to plague him. He will likely require a sustained period of rest followed by rehabilitation, strengthening and gradual batting loading,” he added.

As for the Indian side, Ishant Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja have been ruled out due to injuries that they sustained during the first Test. Virat Kohli will be coming back to the playing XI and leading the hosts.

Meanwhile, due to rainfall in Mumbai, the toss for the second Test match has been delayed. The pitch inspection scheduled at 10:30 am showed a considerably dried pitch, leading the toss at 11:30 am.

The second Test will have just two sessions for the day as the morning session is already wiped out due to a wet pitch. The first session takes place from 12.00 to 2:40. The second and final session takes place from 3:00 to 5:30 IST.
