Killed The Target: US After Airstrikes On ISIS-K ‘Planner’ In Afghanistan

Kabul: Less than 48 hours after suicide bombings outside the Kabul airport claimed by ISIS, the US today retaliated with a drone strike against the Islamic State “planner” in Afghanistan.

“US military forces conducted an over-the-horizon counterterrorism operation today against an ISIS-K planner. The unmanned airstrike occurred in the Nangahar province of Afghanistan. Initial indications are that we killed the target,” Capt Bill Urban, spokesperson of US Central Command, said on Friday.

Biden had yesterday said that the “perpetrators cannot hide”.

“We will not forgive. We will not forget. We will find you and pay you,” Biden said in his address to the nation after the attacks.

An IS affiliate in Afghanistan has claimed responsibility for the attacks in which more than 170 Afghans were killed along with US troops.

The Pentagon informed Friday that the high-risk Kabul operation to evacuate Afghans and Americans from the war-torn country still faces “specific, credible threats”.

“We still believe credible threats are … specific, credible threats. We are certainly prepared and look forward to future efforts,” the Pentagon and John Kirby told reporters.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki also quoted US national security experts as saying another attack was “very likely”, and that the coming few days would be “the most dangerous time ever”, the AFP news agency reported.

The suicide bombings are one of the many that have been claimed by the IS-K in the recent past.
