K’taka Bans Hijabs, Saffron Shawls In Schools, Colleges Run By Minority Welfare Dept
Mumbai: The Karnataka government has restrained students of all schools and colleges under the state Minority Welfare Department, including the Maulana Azad Model English Medium schools, from wearing hijabs, scarves, saffron shawls and religious flags to classrooms until further orders.
The circular issued by Major Manivannan P, Secretary, Minority Welfare Department, Haj and Waqf, cited interim orders of the Karnataka High Court asking students to refrain from wearing any and all religious attire in schools.
“The above order of the High Court is applicable to residential schools, colleges, Maulana Azad Adarsh English Medium Schools under the Minority Welfare Department. Wearing saffron shawls, scarves, hijab or any other religious flag is prohibited in this background. Schools and Colleges and Maulana Azad Model English Medium schools, which come under the minority welfare department,” the order stated.
The Karnataka government’s latest circular comes after an interim order by the Karnataka High Court, which had refused to allow students to attend schools wearing hijabs or scarves, till the final decision. This order had triggered protests in Karnataka and other parts of the country.
Karnataka Police, on the other hand, registered cases against nine people in the Shivamogga district for violating Section 144 in organising the protests against the ruling of the High Court.
