Lack Of Response To 26/11 Different From Uri And Balakot Operations: Jaishnakar

Mumbai: Taking note of terror attacks took place in India, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that the “lack of response” after Mumbai terror attack in 2008 was so different from response after the Uri and Balakot operations and noted that various events bear scrutiny for lessons they hold.

Delivering the 4th Ramnath Goenka Memorial Lecture in The Beyond the Delhi Dogma: Indian Foreign Policy in a Changing World, Jaishankar said that India’s records include “dark moments” like the 1962 defeat against China, such as 1965 war with Pakistan.

“There is enough dualism in our past to generate a spirited debate over successes and failures … The two-decade nuclear indecision ended dramatically with the 1998 tests. The lack of response from 26/11 to the Uri and Balakot campaigns. Very different. Whether it is an event or a trend, they all check for the lessons they hold, “he said.

India carried out a surgical strike on the terrorist launch pad across the Line of Control in 2016 after the Uri terror attack and airstrike at a terrorist camp in Balakot, Pakistan after the terror attack in Pulwama earlier this year.

Jaishankar said that the very structure of the international system was undergoing profound changes.

He said, “The world is not just different. There is a profound change taking place on the very big structure of the international system. We have not been changed like before.”

“We are in a moment in world politics when many of our long-held beliefs are no longer true. If the world is different, we need to think, talk and engage accordingly. Falling back on the past to help the future. ”
