Maha: Petition Filed In Bombay HC Seeks FIR Under Sedition Against Raj Thackeray

Mumbai: A petition has been filed before the Bombay High Court seeking a direction to the Maharashtra government and the Mumbai Police to register an FIR against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on the the the charges of sedition and rioting in connection with the Aurangabad rally on May 1.

The petition was filed by Pune-based activist Hemant Patil and is likely to be mentioned for an urgent hearing today.

In his petition, Patil, who is also the head of an NGO, said that Thackeray organized a rally in Aurangabad on May 1, in which he spoke against NCP chief Sharad Pawar which may cause unrest among the party workers leading to disruption of peace in the state.

He demanded the registration of a case of sedition against the MNS chief. Notably, Thackeray had accused the NCP chief of “dividing Maharashtra into caste politics” during his rally on May 1 and also said that Pawar was an atheist.

After his speech, the Aurangabad police registered an FIR against the MNS chief after watching the viral video of his rally.

Notably, the Mumbai Police on Tuesday confiscated loudspeakers from the MNS office and detained the party’s Chandivali unit chief Mahendra Bhanushali and others.

The controversy over loudspeakers began when on April 12, the MNS chief gave an ultimatum to the Maharashtra government demanding the removal of loudspeakers from mosques within May 3, failing which, he warned, MNS workers would play Hanuman Chalisa on loudspeakers.
