Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray Meets PM Modi; Maratha Reservation Discussed

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and other officials met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday and discussed issues like the Maratha reservation, Other Backward Class (OBC) reservation, financial assistance for cyclone relief measures and GST refund.

Maharashtra Public Works Department minister Ashok Chavan was also part of the delegation. Notably, Congress leader Ashok Chavan heads the cabinet sub-committee on the Maratha quota.

After the meeting at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, Thackeray told the media that issues related to Maratha reservation, Metro car shed and GST compensation were discussed with the PM.

Earlier today, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar met Thackeray at his official residence ‘Varsha’ ahead of the CM’s meeting with PM Modi.

Significantly, in May, Uddhav wrote a letter to the PM and urged him to take steps to include Marathas in the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes or SEBC list, so that the community could claim the reservation in education and public employment at least to 12 per cent and 13 per cent, respectively.

“The Judgement delivered by the Constitution Bench (comprising of five Judges) of the Supreme Court on May 5, 2021, has given me this occasion to write to you with the earnest request that appropriate steps be taken at the earliest to grant reservation to the Maratha community from my State, albeit in accordance with the law, to the minimum extent of 12 per cent in Education and 13 per cent in Public Employment,” read the letter.
