Maharashtra Election: 44 Per Cent People Casted Their Votes

Mumbai: Maharashtra has recorded 44% turnout till 3 pm for the elections for its 288-seat assembly. Voting began at 7 am today and will continue till 6 pm.

According to the Meteorological Department, there may be rain in many parts of Maharashtra today, but till now there were no such reports.

As of 1 pm, Mumbai suburban, Mumbai city and nearby Thane districts recorded pathetic turnout figures of 16.84%, 16.71% and 14.74% respectively. According to official figures of the Election Commission app ‘Voter Turnout’, the combined turnout of Haryana and Maharashtra was 17.59% as of noon.

The estimated polling till 12 noon in Haryana was 23.27% while in Maharashtra it was 16.48%.

1,400 independents are also in the fray. Prominent candidates include Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis from Nagpur South-West, and his predecessor from Congress – Ashok Chavan, who is contesting from Bhokar in Nanded district, and Prithviraj Chavan, who is seeking re-election from Karad South in Satara district.

The election campaign, which ended on Saturday evening, was dominated by the BJP’s aggressive statement of the abolition of Section 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.
