The Shiv Sena parted ways with the BJP to find ways to form a government. However, it failed to prove the support of the required number of MLAs at the time given by the state governor, Bhagat Singh Koshyari.

The Governor then invited the NCP, the third-largest party, imposing President’s rule in the state to prove its ability to thwart the government.
