Mary Kom’s Bid For 2nd Olympic Medal Over After Round Of 16 Defeat At Tokyo Games

Mumbai: India’s six-time world champion boxer Mary Kom exited the Tokyo Olympics after losing in the Round of 16 in the flyweight (48-51kg) category on Thursday. Valencia won bout 3-2.

Valencia defeated Mary Kom in the women’s flyweight (48- 51kg) category to enter the quarter-finals of the showpiece event. Valencia got off a flyer as they won the first round. Four out of five judges gave him 10 while one gave him 9 to show.

Mary Kom hit Valencia with punches to win the second round, but the Rio Olympic bronze medalist kept the lead.

Mary Kom did her best in the third round as well, but the day was not enough in the end. Earlier in the day, boxer Satish Kumar defeated Ricardo Brown of Jamaica in the Round of 16 to enter the quarterfinals of the men’s super-heavyweight (+95kg) category.

Satish defeated Ricardo Brown by a split decision of 4-1 on Thursday. Boxers Pooja Rani (75kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) have already qualified for the quarter-finals of the mega sporting event.
