Mumbai City Is Safe After 10 Year 26/11 Attacks: City Police Chief

Mumbai : Subodh Kumar Jaiswal Police Commissioner of Mumbai said, after ten years of terrorist attack on 26/11 today Mumbai is safe and even the police has the potential to handle any terror threat.

26/11 was one of the most dangerous terror attack in the history where 166 people were dead and over 300 injured as 10-heavily-armed terrorist from Pakistan created turmoil in Mumbai on 26th November, 2008.

While stating to PTI in an interview on the eve of the terror’s attack 10th anniversary Jaiswal said, “We have come a long way in the last 10 years.”

He added saying, “I can assure Mumbaikar’s that the city is safe and police are capable of protecting you from any eventuality. We have strong and trained police force having latest equipment, weapons, and strategy tactics and are always ready to deal with all the challenges.”

Jaiswal, who obeyed in the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), said that Mumbai Police also has a good co-ordination with all state and central agencies dealing with the city security.

While the city has around 5,000 CCTVs which help to detect any doubtful activity, he said.

Other than that the presence of police workforce are armed with modern weapons at sensitive locations. It even has a standard operating procedure to respond to any distress and elevate public awareness are the key to Mumbai’s security.

“The role of police was redefined after the 26/11 attack and there was major overhaul of the city security system,” said Deven Bharti, Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order).

“We have created Quick Response Teams, which will be the first to respond in any situation. There is a dedicated commando team ‘Force One’, with capabilities to handle any terror threat and also the coastal police to secure coastal area,” he said.

Following 26/11 attack, the state government has also made efforts to shield the city, Bharti said, “We have a strong CCTV network in the city and each CCTV is connected with the main police control room through an integrated system. In the last 10 years, we have upgraded in terms of infrastructure, logistics and trained manpower. Police have procured modern security equipment, gadgets, bullet-proof jackets and latest weapons.” 

He also said that the Anti-Terror Cells (ATC) have been located in every police station to keep a tab on any suspected terror movement. Other than that, Anti-Terrorism Squad is also looking up after terror-related activities across the state.

There have been cases where youth were targeted by terror outfit recruiters through internet or social networking sites, he said. The ATS is working to bring the ‘misguided’ youth into mainstream. Earlier year, it has “deradicalised” 120 such men and women, he added.
