Nadal Pulls Out Of Wimbledon And Olympics, Says ‘The goal Is To Prolong My Career’

Mumbai: Twenty-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal has pulled out of the upcoming Wimbledon and Olympic Games, saying that his goal is to prolong his career.

The Spaniard took to Twitter to let his fans know about his decision.

Nadal’s announcement came days after he lost to longtime rival Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the French Open, who eventually won the title.

“Hi all, I have decided not to participate in this year’s Championships at Wimbledon and the Olympic Games in Tokyo. It’s never an easy decision to take but after listening to my body and discuss it with my team I understand that it is the right decision,” Nadal wrote on Twitter.

“The goal is to prolong my career and continue to do what makes me happy, that is to compete at the highest level and keep fighting for those professional and personal goals at the maximum level of competition,” he added.

The 35-year-old was expected to add to his record of 13 titles at the French Open and surpass Roger Federer in the list of all-time highest Grand Slam winner. But a shock defeat for Djokovic means he is tied with Federer, who had previously crashed out in the middle of his French Open campaign to defend himself for the grass-court season.

Nadal is the second men’s singles tennis player after Andre Agassi to have won all four Grand Slams and Olympic gold. He added a second Olympic gold to his Beijing 2008 medal by winning the yellow metal in the men’s doubles event at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
