Navi Mumbai Man Cheats 30 People Of ₹54.9 Lakh By Promising Jobs Abroad, Booked

Mumbai: Police have registered a criminal offence against a man who ran a maritime services office in Navi Mumbai and allegedly cheated at least 30 overseas job aspirants of ₹54.9 lakh in total by promising them jobs abroad.

In May, the accused sent 29 candidates to Abu Dhabi, where they realized that the company they were employed in was not the same. In June, the victims returned to India after the visa period expired.

According to the police, the complainant, in this case, is 36-year-old S Hanifa, a resident of Palakkad in Kerala. In January 2019, the complainant met the accused running the Maritime Service Office in Nerul through a common friend.

The accused told the victim that he provides manpower to the countries of the Middle East and provides employment to people in offshore services. A police officer said he told the victim that an oil and gas company in Abu Dhabi needed 50 employees.

“The accused told the victim that the workers would get a monthly salary of Rs 50,000 and demanded a commission of Rs 3 lakh for placement. He also asked the victim if he could get more people for the job,” said the officer.

After this, the victim spread this word among her friends in Kerala and 29 people who knew the victim agreed to work abroad. On reaching Abu Dhabi, he realized that he had been duped, and approached the accused for his money. However, he kept on giving assurances.

A police complaint was finally lodged on Thursday. A case has been registered under sections 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) of the Indian Penal Code.
