Nirbhaya Case Convicts Misusing Law: Ravi Shankar Prasad

Mumbai: Following the delay in Nirbhaya rape and murder case victims executions, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday said that convicts.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, the minister said that the Supreme Court had upheld the death sentence in the case and mercy petitions of the convicts were rejected by President Ram Nath Kovind.

“The way criminals are misusing the law (law) is unfortunate. It is not right,” he said.

He said that the government had gone to the Delhi High Court against the order of the lower court.
“We are very determined. Nirbhaya, who was the daughter of this country, should get justice. The death penalty should be served as soon as possible,” he said.

The Center had challenged the Delhi High Court order of the Patiala House court which stayed the execution of four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case. A single bench of Justice Suresh Kumar Kait reserved the order in the case after hearing the arguments of all the parties on Sunday.

The execution of the four convicts — Akshay Thakur, Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, and Vinay Sharma — was earlier scheduled to take place on February, 1.
