‘No Decision Yet On Implementation Of NRC: Home Ministry In Lok Sabha

Mumbai: The Union Home Ministry clarified that the government has not yet taken any decision on introducing the  National Register of Citizens (NRC) across the country.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said, “So far, the government has not taken any decision to prepare the National Register of Indian Citizens (NRIC) at the national level.”

This statement assumes significance as it is the first official response of the Ministry of Home Affairs to the nationwide NRC question, which has triggered mass protests across the country.

The Ministry of Home Affairs also said that the questions of the nationwide NRC practices “do not arise” and how it will put additional burden on the citizens.

Last year, PM Narendra Modi also said that there has been no talk of bringing NRC across the country. Later, Home Minister Amit Shah also said that there is no need to debate it (India-NRC) as there is no discussion on it yet.

Shah also claimed that there is no connection between the NRC and the National Population Register (NPR).
