Odisha Becomes First State To Extend Lockdown Till April 30, Urges Centre To Follow

Mumbai: The Odisha government on Thursday extended the COVID-19 lockdown to 30 April, becoming the first state to do so. The closure of educational institutions was extended to 17 June.

This decision was taken during the state cabinet meeting held through video conference earlier today.

In view of the spread of COVID-19, a nationwide 21-day lockdown was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi by 14 April. The Odisha cabinet also recommended the central government to extend the lockdown.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has also requested the Center not to start train and air services till 30 April.

An official release said that records of one lakh rapid trials are being planned as a preventive measure in potential hotspots.

Activities related to agriculture, animal husbandry, MGNREGS will be facilitated to follow the norms of social distances and as before, free movement of goods transport will be allowed in Odisha.

So far, Odisha has reported 42 positive COVID-19 cases. Two people recovered/were discharged, while one died.

The total number of positive COVID-19 cases rose to 5,734 on Thursday, including 5,095 active cases, while 472 people have either been cured or discharged. So far, 166 deaths have taken place, as per the Health Ministry.
