Only 0.33% COVID-19 Patients Are On Ventilators: Dr Harsh Vardhan

Mumbai: Union Health Minister Drs. Harshvardhan said on Wednesday that only 0.33 per cent of the total cases of coronovirus are on ventilators.

During a video conference with Larden Club International, Vardhan said, “Only 0.33 per cent patients are on ventilators, 1.5 per cent patients are on oxygen support and 2.34 per cent patients are in ICU, which reflects the quality of care being provided across the country.”

Highlighting India’s approach in combating COVID-19, he said, “This time our approach has been five times recognized: (i) maintaining a consistent situational awareness, (ii) pre-emptive and proactive approach, Graded response according to (iii) a constantly evolving scenario, (iv) inter-regional coordination at all levels, and finally, but most importantly (v) the movement of people to combat the disease to construct. ”

Commenting on India’s strength in dealing with the disease, he said, “India has successfully dealt with international health and epidemic public health emergencies in the past as well.”

“Our country has the national core capabilities set forth in the International Health Regulations for the management of public health emergencies. The Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), which is a nation-wide surveillance system for epidemic-prone diseases, has been activated towards COVID-19 response, and is being further strengthened with substantive digital inputs,” he added.

“For the last three days, the doubling rate in the country is 11.3 days. Although the global death rate is around 7 per cent, the death rate in India is around 3 per cent, of which about 86 per cent are deaths. With co-morbidity,” Vardhan he said.

He also mentioned that 288 government laboratories are working with 16,000 sample collection centres along with 97 private laboratory chains and testing around 60,000 tests per day. He said that the government plans to increase the testing capacity to 1 lakh per day in the next few days.

The Health Minister further noted that since the development of a vaccine is going to last longer, lockdown and social disturbances are acting as effective ‘social vaccines’. “The Ministry of Science and Technology, under my charge, is also working on innovations and financing some projects which are going to significantly speed up the testing process”, he said.
