Operation Ganga: PM Modi Asks Air Force To Join Evacuation Efforts In Ukraine

Mumbai: To augment the ongoing evacuation efforts under Operation Ganga, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called upon the Indian Air Force to join the evacuation efforts.

According to reports, the Indian Air Force may deploy several C-17 aircraft to evacuate Indians from Tuesday. Along with evacuating people, IAF aircraft will help in distributing humanitarian aid more efficiently Also Read: 64-Km-Long Russian Convoy Nears Ukraine’s Kyiv, Pics Surface

Until now, only private Indian carriers were evacuating Indians from Romania and Hungary, the western countries having land borders with Ukraine, as Ukrainian airspace was closed since February 24.

On February 26, India began evacuating around 14,000 of its stranded citizens from Ukraine’s neighbouring countries after the closure of Ukrainian airspace.

Earlier on Monday, the government has decided to send four Union ministers to oversee the evacuation. Union Ministers Hardeep Singh Puri, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Gen (Retd) V.K. Singh and Kiren Rijiju will be deployed in Ukraine’s neighbouring countries Hungary, Romania-Maldova, Poland and the Slovak Republic to coordinate and monitor the evacuation of Indians. Also Read: India To Send 4 Ministers To Ukraine’s Neighbouring Countries For Evacuation Of Indians

This was announced after a meeting chaired by PM Modi who said the ‘entire government machinery is working round-the-clock to ensure that all Indian nationals there are safe and secure’.
