Police Look For Girl With ‘Free Kashmir’ Poster;Girl Clarifies In Video

In a video message posted on YouTube and Facebook, Mehak suggested that she was not trying to call for Kashmir's independence from India, but given her solidarity for basic constitutional rights to Internet lockdown

Mumbai: The Mumbai Police said on Tuesday that they have taken serious cognizance of the ‘Free Kashmir’ poster shown during a protest on Monday and are searching for the girl holding it.

Meanwhile, the girl with the poster released a video stating that she is showing solidarity for basic constitutional rights. “Placards meant the freedom to express themselves, freedom from Internet lockdown,” she said.

The woman under consideration is 37-year-old Mehak Mirza Prabhu, a Mumbai storyteller, writer and artist. Facing backlash and criticism over his act, Mehak said that he was being misrepresented and was only speaking for the rights of Kashmiris when he caught the plank.

In a video message posted on YouTube and Facebook, Mehak suggested that she was not trying to call for Kashmir’s independence from India, but given her solidarity for basic constitutional rights to Internet lockdown.

“The whole social media picture came as a complete shock to me. Placard meant freedom to express themselves, freedom from Internet lock-down, for which many people have been voicing. I was voicing my solidarity for basic constitutional rights. No other agenda or motive is ever the same. If it is naive to understand the effect, and in the process, it will create a stir. I apologize. I am an artist who believes in basic human compassion,” she wrote.

Saying that the issue has been misrepresented and proportionately blown up, she says in the video, “I am not a Kashmiri, unlike the spreading of false facts.” I am from Mumbai; I am a Maharashtrian. When I saw that plank, what came to my mind was about the basic constitutional rights of Kashmiris. Equal rights have been taken away from the people of Kashmir due to internet shutdown for the last five months. Equal rights have been taken away from the people of Kashmir due to internet shutdown for the last five months. Like us, they should have the same right to freedom of expression. They should get the basic rights that we have. That’s why I put that poster with a flower. ”

Towards the end, she urges people to spread her side of the story and counter hate with love. Watch the video here:
