Politicization Of UN Listing, FATF Should Be Avoided To Deal With Terrorism: PM Modi’s Swipe At China

Mumbai: PM Narendra Modi while taking a sarcasm at China said that the politicization of UN listings and mechanisms like FATF should be avoided to ensure that access to funds and resources to terrorists are cut off.

PM Modi made the statement while addressing the leaders’ talks on strategic response to terrorism and violent extremist organizations at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister also said that money and ammunition should not be allowed to terrorists.

“The Prime Minister called for a qualitative upgrade in ongoing cooperation and intelligence sharing through a bilateral and regional framework,” Foreign Ministry Secretary (One) Gitesh Sarma told reporters quoting Modi.

“The Prime Minister said that terrorists should not be allowed to obtain money and weapons. To serve this purpose, we need to avoid politicization of mechanisms like UN Listing and FATF implementing these mechanisms need, ”said Sarma.

Sharing India’s experiences, Modi said that democratic values, diversity and inclusive development were the most important weapons against ideologies promoting terrorism, extremism, and radicalism.

Sarma said, “He suggested institutionalizing counter-terrorism cooperation at the multilateral level. He said that India would work towards increasing ongoing cooperation in capacity building of friendly countries in the region.”

Modi called for global solidarity and readiness against terrorism, in the same way, the world has shown solidarity against challenges like climate change.

“The terrorist attack, he said, should be regarded as terrorism anywhere in the world, not good or bad terrorism,” Sarma said.

Earlier in the day, Modi addressed the Climate Action Summit and the high-level meeting on Universal Health Coverage.
