Protests Erupts Against Neelam Jhelum Hydropower Project

Mumbai: People of Pakistan occupied Kashmir took to the streets of Muzaffarabad to raise their voice against the Neelam Jhelum hydropower project. Pakistan’s Neelam Jhelum project is leading to the scarcity of water in the region.

The people from POK were spotted voicing anti-Pakistan slogans pleading to Pakistan to stop the project saying the project is meant to serve the other provinces including Punjab. The same situation had happened in September 2018, the protesters had to come out on the streets and demand the stoppage of this project. The Neelam and Jhelum dams are the source of water for the POK region and with Pakistan diverting the water to Punjab would only lead to even more scarcity of water.

The protesters also said that they barely get electricity that would be enough for running the dams. The required electric energy is said to be 400mw to 500mw. The Neelam Jhelum hydropower project became functional in august 2018 producing up to 1.500MW of electricity.

People from the POK region have protested time and again asking Pakistan to stop this project and stop constructing new dams that dry up the water in the POK region. The projects are also taking a toll on the region’s ecological aspect.
