The Supreme Court on Friday heard senior advocate Devdutt Kamat, who filed the SLP, in the interim order of the Karnataka High Court over the hijab controversy in the state’s colleges and schools.

Kamat had also said that the Karnataka HC’s directive that one should not wear religious attire or anything symbolizing religious identity had far-reaching implications.

Kamat told Chief Justice of India NV Ramana that Article 25 was in danger, to which the Supreme Court said the Karnataka HC was already hearing the matter on an urgent basis and orders were yet to come.

The CJI also told Kamat to not spread it to larger levels, adding “Think over, is it proper to bring these things to Delhi…national level…if there is anything wrong we will protect…”

In an interim decision by the Karnataka High Court to ban all religious wear, including hijab and saffron shawls, till an order is passed in the matter, a student moved the apex court challenging the high court’s order.
