Sonia Attacks Centre, Says Farmers Being Forced To Observe Black Deepawali

Mumbai: Congress President Sonia Gandhi attacked the ruling BJP, led by Narendra Modi, saying that farmers are being forced to follow “Kali Deepawali” as Kharif crops have minimum support price (MSP) of at least 22.5. Are being sold at a percentage and demanded that the exploitation of “doubly farmers should stop.

In a statement on the eve of Diwali, Gandhi alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not fulfill his promise to give MSP at 50 percent on input cost to the government, and alleged that it would allow “middlemen” from year to year Giving benefits and “looting crores of rupees from farmers”.

She said that the way Kharif crops are being sold “below MSP”, it would cause a loss of Rs 50,000 crore to the farmers and the government’s rule was to stop the exploitation of farmers.

She said, “The BJP government betrayed the farmers soon after coming to power. The question is whether the farmers are forced to celebrate Kali Deepawali during the festival days.”

She went on saying, even farmers who sowed paddy are getting less than Rs 200 per quintal from MSP in the presence of moisture in the crop.

He said that 140.57 million tonnes of food grains are expected to be produced during Kharif 2019-20.

She said, “The way crops are being sold below 22.5% on average from MSP, farmers alone will suffer a loss of Rs 50,000 crore. Who will pay for this?”

The Congress leader also expressed concern over the government-announced MSP for the 2020-21 rabi crops and said it was increased by “four to seven percent” compared to the previous year.

“On the one hand, the BJP-led government has imposed 4 percent on fertilizers, 12 percent on agricultural implements and 18 percent on pesticides, which has put an unnecessary burden on the farmers, on the other hand, the price of diesel is continuously increasing,” he said.

“The result is that they are not getting a fair price of the crop and the exports are also decreasing. The farmers are getting a double blow. Congress demands that the double exploitation of the farmers should stop and they get a fair price for their hard work the real government religion, “Gandhi said.
