Mumbai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Palaniswamy said on Monday that his government is committed to releasing the culprits of the seven Rajiv Gandhi assassination and it is expected that the state’s governor will work on the recommendation of the Cabinet to free them.

After settling a petition of the families of the people killed in 1991, with the former Prime Minister, the statement of Palani Swamy has been reported between both the opposition and the Tamil groups, for the release of seven.

The family had challenged the Tamil Nadu government’s first decision in 2014 to release the seven convicts.

Talking to reporters here, Palaniswamy said that the cabinet proposal is in line with public sentiment.

He said, “We wanted seven to be released and that’s why the cabinet proposal was adopted and it was sent to the governor.” The governor has to decide (on the matter), “he said.

He said, “We took a decision based on the public sentiment, adopted the cabinet proposal and sent it to the governor. We hope that he will take action.”
