Tokyo Hopes End For Kidambi Srikanth, Saina Nehwal As BWF Says No Further Events In Qualifying Window

Mumbai: Saina Nehwal and Srikanth Kidambi have been officially eliminated from the Tokyo Olympics 2021 after failing to qualify for the tournament. According to the Badminton World Federation (BWF), the cut-off date to qualify is June 15 and there are scheduled events to play before that.

“The Badminton World Federation (BWF) can confirm no further tournaments will be played inside the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games qualifying window. As such, while the qualification period officially closes on 15 June 2021 as per the Revised Tokyo 2020 Qualification System, the current Race To Tokyo rankings list will not change. Invitations will be sent shortly with final participation lists and seedings to be published at the conclusion of this process,” BWF said in its release.

According to the rules, a player must be in the top 16 in the ranking to qualify for the Olympics. Nehwal is 22nd while Kidambi is 20th in the rankings. They could make both places but missed the postponement of badminton events.

Nehwal, the first Indian shuttler to win an Olympic medal, won a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics. On the other hand, Srikanth was part of the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he was eliminated after losing to Lin Dan in the quarter-finals.

PV Sindhu, who won the Silver Medal in Rio, and Sai Praneeth are the two Indian shuttlers who have qualified in the singles category.

Apart from Sindhu and Praneeth, Satwiksairaj and Chirag Shetty have also qualified for the Olympics. They will be playing in the doubles category.
