UK approves Covishield In Revised Travel Rules After India Warns Of Reciprocal Action

Mumbai: The United Kingdom on Wednesday revised its travel advisory in which it said Covishield, jointly developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford and manufactured by the Serum Institute of India (SII), as an approved vaccine for travellers visiting Britain from any part of the world from October 4 onwards.

India had earlier protested the UK’s non-recognition of the Covishield vaccine and warned of “reciprocal measures” if the ‘discriminatory police’ was not amended.

In its new advice, the UK said a traveller would be considered fully vaccinated if they were vaccinated with a full dose of Oxford-AstraZeneca, Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, or Janssen vaccines from a relevant public health body in select countries.

The advisory further said that along with Covishield, other formulations of the four aforementioned vaccines – as AstraZeneca Vaxzevria or Moderna Takeda – shall also qualify as approved vaccines.

Speaking to the media, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla on Tuesday said that the non-recognition of Covishield was a ‘discriminatory policy’ and claimed that “it affects our citizens travelling to the UK.

The EAM has raised the issue strongly with the new UK foreign secretary”. “I am told that certain assurances have been given that this issue will be resolved,” he had said.
