Virar Hospital Fire: MVA Announces Financial Assistance Of Rs 5 Lakh

Mumbai: Thirteen COVID-19 patients died within an hour early today in the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Virar, Maharashtra, after which the Maha Vikas Aghadi extended financial assistance of Rs 5 lakhs each to the families of those who lost their lives.

Speaking to the media, Maharashtra minister Eknath Shinde termed it as a major accident and said that those found responsible will not be spared.

An official said that there were 90 patients in the hospital, 18 of them in the ICU when the fire broke out in the AC unit after the explosion. The dead include five women and eight men.

After the accident, five patients were rescued and shifted to other hospitals in the area.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has ordered an inquiry into the incident, while former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya said officials should investigate whether the hospital had a fire safety audit or not.
