We’ll Judge Taliban By Their Actions: Joe Biden Tells G7

Mumbai: US President Joe Biden told Group of Seven (G7) leaders on Tuesday that the US aims to evacuate Afghanistan by August 31. Emphasizing that the G7, the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have decided to stand united in their approach towards the Taliban, Biden said that the US will judge the Taliban by their actions.

“The G7 leaders, the EU, NATO, the United Nations have agreed to be united in our approach to the Taliban. We’ll judge them (Taliban) by their actions and we’ll stay in close coordination on any steps that we take moving forward in response to Taliban behaviour,” Biden told the G7 leaders on Tuesday.

The group of countries also resolved that the legitimacy of a potential government in Afghanistan would be determined by its attitude to international obligations, including preventing Afghanistan from being used as a base for terrorism.

So far, the United States has evacuated about 70,700 people from Afghanistan since August 14. Since the end of July, the US has moved about 75,900 people – the US president said. He clarified that with each passing day, the US troops were at risk of being attacked by the Islamic State.

In a detailed statement, the G7 group said that “the Taliban will be held accountable for their actions to stop terrorism, especially on the human rights of women, girls and minorities, and to reach an inclusive political settlement in Afghanistan”.
