When Players Prioritise IPL Over Playing For Country, What Can We Say? Kapil Dev Reacts After India’s Exit From T20 WC

Mumbai: Legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev believes that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should take responsibility for changes in the cricket schedule to ensure that former world champions avoid ‘mistakes’ made in the 2021 edition of the ICC T20 World Cup.

Despite starting out as clear favourites to lift the famous trophy in the 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup, Virat Kohli-led Team India failed to enter the business end of the showpiece event Kohli and Co were knocked out of the T20 World Cup when New Zealand registered a comfortable win over Afghanistan to secure the second and last spot from Group 2. Reflecting on India’s forgettable campaign in the ICC World T20 2021, former India captain Kapil said that the players should be proud to represent the Asian giants at the highest level.

Kapil told ABP News, “When players give priority to IPL over playing for the country, what can we say? Players should be proud to play for their country. The second leg of IPL 2021 was rescheduled after the devastation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The league ended just 2 days before the start of the ICC event “I feel that first in line should be the country’s team and then franchises. I’m not saying do not play cricket there (IPL), but the responsibility is now on the BCCI to plan its cricket better. Kohli-led team India will play its final match of ICC World T20 2021 against Namibia on Monday. Captain Kohli will step down as India’s T20I captain after his team’s final match against Namibia.

“I just feel that there should have been some gap between IPL and the World Cup. But this is certainly there that our players today have a lot of exposure but they could not make the most of it,” Kapil added.
