Will Urge Farmers In Kolkata To Defeat BJP In Polls: Rakesh Tikait

Mumbai: Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait said he will visit Kolkata on March 13 and urge farmers there to defeat BJP in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, but claimed he is not supporting any political party.

The BKU leader said, “I will go to Kolkata on March 13. A clear call for a decisive struggle will come from Kolkata. We will talk to the farmers there and urge them to defeat the BJP,”  the BKU leader said. He was in Ballia to address a ‘Kisan Mahapanchayat’.

In response to a question whether he would meet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Tikait said there was no such program.

The farmer leader said that calls had already been made to defeat the BJP in the five assembly elections that began on March 27, but added that he would not support any political party.

Apart from West Bengal, assembly elections are due in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Votes will be counted on 2 May.

Tikait said that the farmers’ agitation will continue and he is ready to negotiate with the central government. “If the Indian government talks, we will talk,” he said.

Replying to a question, the farmer leader said he had no intention to contest elections.

Addressing another Kisan Sabha at Rasra, Tikait said that a long battle will be fought and success will be achieved.

Calling to intensify the struggle of the peasants, he said that it is a symbol of their self-respect, Tikait warned that if the peasants were defeated, the workers and youth would also be defeated.

Stating that this fight should be conducted with full force, he asked the farmers to order their tractors and trolleys and be prepared. He said that a call to leave Delhi can be made any day.
