23-Year-Old Boxer Lovlina Secures India’s 2nd Medal At Tokyo Olympics

Mumbai: India’s 23-year-old boxer Lovlina Borgohain assured herself a medal at the Tokyo Olympics after advancing to the semi-finals of the women’s 69kg category.

Lovlina defeated 24-year-old Chinese Taipei’s Nien-Chin Chen in the quarter-finals today. With this, she secured India’s second medal at the Olympics.

Borgohain defeated Nien-Chin Chen in a 4–1 split decision. In the first round, five judges gave divided decisions but after two rounds all the judges anonymously stamped Lovlina’s dominance.

The Indian boxer took Round 1 (3-2) very narrowly and this put pressure on his Taipei opponent. Lovlina took charge in Round 2, and she deftly defended Nien-Chin’s punches with her excellent footwork.

The 23-year-old did not give up and kept his momentum in the third as she assured the second medal for India in Tokyo Olympics 2020. 

Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu bagged India’s first medal after winning the silver medal in the 49kg event.
