8-Yr-Old Hospitalised With Swollen Legs After Teacher Makes Her Do 450 sit-Ups

No arrest has been made so far, the official said, adding that a probe is underway in the case

Mumbai: In a shocking incident, a private tuition teacher in Maharashtra has been booked for allegedly telling an eight-year-old student to “do 450 sit-ups” for not completing her homework, PTI reported.

Officials said that a girl studying in class 3 at a school in Thane district became ill after the incident on Friday and had to be hospitalized.

Prior to the incident, the teacher, identified as Lata, had also allegedly snatched the girl last month and beat her with a cane stick for not doing homework, Subha Inspector Sohail Pathan of Naya Nagar Police Station Referring to the complaint lodged by the child’s mother.

Officials told PTI, “On Friday, the teacher asked the girl, a resident of Shanti Nagar locality in Mira Road area, to do 450 sit-ups as punishment for not doing her homework.”

When the girl returned home from tuition classes, her mother noticed that the child was unable to walk and found swelling in both her legs.

At the time, the teacher appeared indifferent when the girl’s mother inquired here, police said.

On the basis of the complaint, the teacher has been booked under the provisions of Indian Penal Code Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act.

No arrest has been made so far, the official said, adding that a probe is underway in the case.
