Aashadhi Ekadashi: Importance, Significance And Auspicious Muhurta

Counting the 11th day of the month of Ashad every year, Maharashtrians celebrate Aashaadi Ekadashi which is also known as Shyani Ekadashi. It is one of the most important and religious festivals celebrated in Maharashtra where devotees walk all their way to Pandharpur- a sacred place amongst Maharashtrians. It is there in Pandharpur where a huge number of devotees gather to celebrate the festival. It is a religious possession that is held every year during the Aashaadh Shukla Paksha.

During their walking journey to Pandharpur, devotees chant hymns of Sant Dnyaneshwar and Sant Tukaram who are considered as holy Gods in the Hindu Religion and consider fasting the entire day in the name of Lord Vitthal. This possession starts in Allandi and ends on the day of Guru Purnima in Pandharpur. This journey comprises of not only Maharashtrians but people from all over the state. The atmosphere is a charm and enthusiasm is seen in all the people.

History and Significance

It is said that on this day of Great Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu fell asleep and again woke up after four months on the day of Prabhodini Ekadashi which falls during the Kartik month. This time of the month is called the Chaturmas which coincides with our rainy season. This festival is celebrated usually in the month of June and July. Owning these purans this festival is celebrated in every part of the state with great devotion and grandeur to pay homage to Lord Vitthal.

The holy possession includes people carrying multiple palanquins which are decorated and have photos of the great saints. Pandharpur shines in its great glory when the walls of the city are echoed by the music played and songs sung by people. Variety of dishes are prepared for the bhakts and offered as a Prasad.
