Archer Deepika Kumari Becomes World No. 1 After Winning Gold At WC

Mumbai: Archer Deepika Kumari on Monday became world number one as World Archery unveiled its latest rankings. She completed his hat-trick of gold medals by winning the recurve individual event 6-0 at the Archery World Cup Stage 3 in Paris on Sunday.

Indian archer Kumari defeated Russia’s Elena Osipova 6-0. This is Deepika’s second individual World Cup gold medal of 2021 and her third gold of the day as she also won gold in the women’s team and mixed team events on Sunday.

He said, ‘I am happy, but at the same time I have to continue my performance like this. I want to improve it because the upcoming tournament is very important for us. I am trying my best to continue learning whatever I can,” the official website of World Archery quoted Kumari as saying.

Earlier, the husband-wife duo of Dipika and Atanu clinched their maiden World Cup gold as a pair after beating the Dutch pair of Gabriella Schlosser and Szef van den Bergh 5-3 after a set-down.

Earlier in the day, India’s women’s recurve team of Deepika Kumari, Komalika Bari, and Ankita Bhakat won the gold medal at the Archery World Cup Stage 3 in the French capital. In the final, the team defeated Mexico 5–1.

The upcoming tournament is less than a month away from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Kumari will represent India in Japan as the lone female archer, joining a full men’s team as she attempts to win the country’s first archery medal at the world’s biggest sporting event.
