BSP Chief Mayawati Appoints Nephew Akash Anand As Her Successor

Mumbai: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Sunday announced her nephew Akash Anand as her successor.

Confirming the development, BSP leader Udayveer Singh said Anand has been asked to work in states where the party is weak, except in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. “We have started preparations for the Lok Sabha elections to be held next year,” Singh added.

The declaration was made on Sunday during a party workers’ meeting that Mayawati presided over at the party’s state office in Lucknow. The party would evaluate its performance in the just finished assembly elections in three states—Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh—according to the official statement released on Saturday.

In the interim, discussions took place over the choice of candidates for the 2024 Lok Sabha assembly election. After controlling Madhya Pradesh for eighteen of the previous twenty years, the BJP broke records and regained control of the state. This suggests that the party has a strong organizational presence in the state and that its programs and leaders are well-liked.

On the list of the BSP’s top campaigners for the Himachal Pradesh assembly election was the name of Akash Anand, who has long been expected to succeed Mayawaiti.

In addition, Akash Anand has been given the responsibility of reorganizing the party organization in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh as well as preparing party cadre for the assembly election.

In 2019, after Mayawati restructured the BSP after splitting from the Samajwadi Party, Akash was appointed national coordinator.

The BSP had made an effort to become the third option available in Himachal Pradesh. A number of the party rallies in Himachal Pradesh were addressed by Mayawati and National Coordinator Akash Anand.

The event occurs one day after Danish Ali, the MP for Amroha, was suspended by the BJP for “anti-party” activities. Danish Ali has refuted the allegations and stated that he has merely spoken out against the “anti-people” policies of the BJP-led administration.

The Uttar Pradesh section of the party issued a brief statement stating that Ali has been suspended due to his anti-party activities.

The move came a day after Ali walked out of Lok Sabha proceedings along with other opposition members to protest against the government’s motion to expel TMC member Mahua Moitra for “unethical conduct”. Other BSP members remained seated in the House.

Ali has been actively joining opposition ranks in attacking the BJP and its policies even though the Mayawati-led BSP has maintained a distance from the ruling alliance as well as the opposition.
