China Donates 1.7 Lakh PPE Kits To India Amid Covid-19 Pandemic

Mumbai: In a recent development, the Ministry of Health said that China donated 170,000 personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to India on Monday to help the neighbouring country fight the outbreak of coronavirus disease (Kovid-19).

Domestic supply of additional 20,000 PPE will start soon. In total, these 190,000 kits will be distributed to hospitals and health facilities. This will add 387,000 PPE already available in the country.

Development is in debate as to whether India has enough PPE kits to distribute to its frontline health care workers who are working round the clock to spread the fast-spreading infection.

In addition, 200,000 domestically produced N95 masks are being sent to various hospitals, with a statement from the Ministry of Health stating that around 1.6 million such masks are already available.

A major portion of fresh supplies will be sent to relatively high incidence states such as Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Delhi, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Rajasthan.

“The introduction of foreign supplies is a major milestone in our efforts to purchase personal protective equipment for the fight against Kovid-19,” the ministry said.

It stated that a Singapore-based company was ordered to place 8 million full PPE kits. Also, negotiations with the Chinese platform to order 6 million complete PPE kits are in the final stages, which will also include N95 masks.
