China Reports Zero New Coronavirus Deaths For First Time

Mumbai: The National Health Commission said that China on Tuesday reported no new coronavirus deaths for the first time since it started publishing figures in January.

Cases have declined since March in mainland China, but the country is facing a second wave of infections brought from abroad, with health officials reporting a total of 1,000 imported cases.

Health officials in China reported 32 new cases nationwide, all of which were imported.

Health officials said 30 new asymptomatic infections also occurred, bringing the national total to 1,033. About a quarter of the current total odd cases were also imported from abroad.

Last week, China began disclosing the number of asymptomatic cases for the first time after growing public concerns over the ability of “silent” carriers to spread the disease.

There is also growing concerned over a possible resurgence in the epicentre of Wuhan, where the virus was first detected at the end of last year.

After several asymptomatic cases were confirmed in the central Chinese city, local authorities on Monday revoked the “epidemic-free” status of 45 residential compounds.

To date, 81,740 people have been infected in Wuhan and adjoining Hubei Province, and 3,331 people have died from the deadly virus in China.

Meanwhile, the global death toll from the pandemic has surpassed 70,000 as the virus ravages numerous countries in Europe
