Cyber Fraud At Its Best

Mumbai: Though the online payment options have brought in our lives, it has also made it easy for online thugs to snatch money from you. A 45-year-old woman Mona Markar from Wadala east had recently purchased a saree from the online shopping site. The money was to be paid by cash on delivery, but on its arrival, she found that the saree was defective.

Markar later contacted the website but could not get any replies, after searching the internet for a way to contact the site she found a customer care number. The people on the phone directed her to create a Google pay app through which she would have got the refund, but after clicking on the link she lost almost 1 lakh of her money.

Cyber experts say these are the e-wallet skimming frauds. E-wallet skimming has become prevalent in India, many people have become a victim. The victims initially are bombarded by fraud messages and links to win a lottery or a potential change in bank accounts. The crime ranks first on the chart of cybercrimes. People using OLX need to be extra cautious. Cyber expert Ravish Bhatiya said, most of the times e-wallet are linked to credit or debit cards or bank accounts. And once the thief gets access to it, it’s a piece of cake for them.

According to Superintendent of police, Maharashtra cyber cell, Bal Singh Rajput said that the if you click on any product to purchase it the fraud could call you and ask to install a specific money transfer app. Later they will ask you to click on the invite link. “After getting the details of QR code and reference number of the buyer, the sender sends a link of approval and once it is done the money gets transferred and the fraud is executed,” the fraud keeps the buyer engaged the buyer fails to see what happens after clicking the link.
