Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium To Be Renamed Arun Jaitley Stadium

Mumbai: The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) on Tuesday decided to recreate the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium as the Arun Jaitley Stadium in memory of its former president, who died on Saturday.

The naming ceremony will take place on 12 September, where a stand at Kotla will be named after India’s captain Virat Kohli as previously announced.

This ground will continue to be known as Ferozeshah Kotla, as it is the only stadium named by DDCA.

Speaking on the occasion, DDCA president Rajat Sharma said, “It was Arun Jaitley’s support and encouragement that players like Virat Kohli, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Ashish Nehra, Rishabh Pant and many others could make India proud.”

“What can be better to have the stadium named after the man who rebuilt it under his presidentship,” Sharma added.

During his tenure at DDCA, Jaitley is credited with transforming the stadium into a modern facility, creating the ability to accommodate more fans in addition to building a world-class dressing room.

The ceremony to be held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will be attended by Home Minister Amit Shah and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju.

Firoz Shah Kotla Stadium is the second oldest cricket stadium in India after the Eden Gardens in Kolkata and was established in 1883. The stadium currently has a capacity of over 40,000.

It has hosted 34 Test matches, 25 ODIs, and 5 T20I matches. Apart from this, it also hosts matches for the Delhi Cricket team as well as the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capital.
